South Bay XC Roundup: Bay League #2

By Bob Wolstein

The day started with thunder and lightning, and ended with some light showers and a beautiful rainbow above what many consider the toughest H.S. cross country course in California, located in Palos Verdes Estates.  The toughest of the many hills is appropriately named, “Agony”.

In between, the Mira Costa girls and Redondo boys came through with victories in this year’s second Bay League meet.

For the girls, a one/two punch by Redondo’s  Cara Ulizio and Amber Gore could not overcome the overall depth of Mira Costa.  Ulizio led for most of the race and won it going away a few seconds ahead of her teammate Gore.    Mira Costa’s Abby Hong finished third while the Mustangs showed tremendous depth especially with their #4 and #5 runners.  They won the meet with 40 points while Redondo scored 46 points.  Palos Verdes ran very strong as well with 55 points while Penninsula and West Torrance rounded out the field with 87 and 111 respectively.

The boys event was much tighter with Ryland Dreibelbis taking the early lead with a few of his teammates.  But a strong finish by Redondo’s Evan Malone White and his teammates forced a two way scoring tie with 38 points each…  Redondo took the meet title due to their 6th place runner convincingly defeating P.V.’s 6th place runner.  The key to this race was a pass by a Redondo runner over a P.V. runner right at the finish line….Peninsula ran as a fairly tight pack throughout and finished third with 73 points while West Torrance and Mira Costa rounded out the field with 83 and 127 points respectively.

We are proud to also report that Village Runner employee Taylor ran a very strong race in the girl’s JV race.

The third and final Bay League meet will be held in three weeks at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach, home of the Mira Costa Mustangs.  Congrats to all the participants, coaches and parent volunteers who assisted in putting on this great race.  Thank you to Mr Carlos Caracoza for providing me with the most thirst quenching purple Gatorade I’ve ever had.
